Who was Mark Twain?

 

Mark Twain was not Mark Twain. He was born on November 30, 1835 as Samuel Langhorne Clemens and died on April 21, 1910. He is most famous for his two novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finnť.

What are Mark Twain's Assets?

He was known as an American Humorist, writer, lecturer and satirist. He has been quoted often due to his famous ability to provide good old fashion quotations that seemed to fit the occasion.

He was born in Florida, Missouri and was the  sixth of seven children but only three of them survived and even his father died when he was 11 years old. When Samuel (Mark) was 4 years old the family moved Hannibal Missouri, a port town on the Mississippi River.

Career Highlights

 

He studied to become a River boat captain earning a huge amount of money and served in that capacity until the civil war started. He initially became a member of the confederacy but them went to Nevada to join his brother and avoid the killing during the war.

 

He then went to San Francisco where he wrote and lectured. He then was assigned to Hawaii. After that he was assigned to the Middle East and Europe. He soon married and moved to Connecticut and had three daughters there.

Mark Twain's first book

He first published under Mark Twain in November 18, 1865. It was a work call "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". Then he was commissioned to write about his travels to Europe, which became wildly popular.

Then a second was written about his travels in Nevada. Then more travel books that were satirical works of his life and travels in and around the west. Then came the books about his travel and life on the Mississippi River which include Tom Sawyer adventures which featured Huck Finn.

Eventually he wrote "The adventures of Huckleberry Finn" which solidified him as a true American writer. He became very prolific and wrote many novels.

He met Henry Rogers and they became good friends. By this time 1904, Twain had lost 3 of 4 daughters and his wife so the Rogers family became a replacement family. He eventually died on April 21, 1910 at the age of 75.

What Can you expect here?

Mark Twain’s life and writing s have been celebrated over and over by many authors. There are supurb books that have been converted to audio books and we are lucky to have the best. I am sorry to say that at this point in time we do not have an audio book of Mark Twain's biography. I have reviewed some of the biographies from authors in and around the net and will be making a copy of the biography from Project Gutenberg into an audio book but it will take most of the summer to finish. In the meantime we have many biography audio books about many other authors and famous people. There is quiet a selection. The library has thousands of titles to pick from if you get tired of biographies. There is also a large selection of Mark Twains books and short stories.

I have made a copy of the biography of Mark Twain from Project Gutenberg and have put it on the page labled as Biography#1 for your review and copy if you wish. You can make a copy of it and keep it if you like. Again, I will atempt to make an audio book from this biography for your enjoyment during the summer months and will let you know when it is available.
